Many cultures celebrate light during the darker months, so we put together a rolling selection that started in November as a mix of some of these with Christmas music, and then developed into the programme below.
| arr Hugh Roberton | All through the night |
| Johann Sebastian Bach | Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light |
| John Wilbye | Draw on, sweet night |
| Zoltán Kodály | Evening song |
| Arthur Sullivan | The long day closes |
| Gerald Finzi | My spirit sang all day |
| Thomas Tallis | O nata lux de lumine |
| Eric Whitacre | Sleep |
| Sir Hubert Parry | Sunset and evening star |
| Samuel Barber | To be sung on the water |
| John Joubert | Torches |
Tomás Luis de Victoria is generally reckoned to be the greatest Spanish composer of the late Renaissance, reaching levels of polyphonic perfection and expressive intensity at least equal to Palestrina and Lassus. We're contrasting a rather gorgeous selection of his music with songs from some of his more modern compatriots.
